So what exactly is this thing called cloud computing?  The answer depends on who you ask.

We like to describe the cloud as three separate services, each of which has unique characteristics and each of which builds on the ones below it.

Software as a Service (SaaS) is where companies deliver software services on a shared platform. Many users are active on the same platform that is based on IaaS and PaaS.  Examples of SaaS are Salesforce.com or Gmail. The service provider delivers a complete solution and the customer does not need any server hardware to use the service.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) is where companies provide a cloud-based platform that is pre-configured with software which the end user must configure and supply their own data.  Examples of this are a web server, a Microsoft Exchange email server, or a database server.  This platform is built on a bare-bones IaaS cloud server.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is where the cloud service provider delivers bare-bones virtual machines consisting of compute, storage and networking capacity.  The customer must provide all operating system and application software and must configure the entire solution.  IaaS requires a lot of detailed IT knowledge.
